Food-Tips: Comparing the Yoruba Ewedu Soup Vs The Igbo Okazi Soup, Similarities and Differences
Hello guys, it’s been a while
since I last posted about soups and today am going to write about two different
kinds of soups and make a comparison. Please note that this comparison is not
going to be from a Food Nutritionist point of view neither is it going to be
influence by any tribal or ethnical group opinion or what so ever.
The comparison is going to be
strictly base of the fact that I have tasted these soups. In other words, it’s
going to be about my opinion but if you have a different view about my
comparison, please feel free to tell us with details via your comment below.
Our comparison today is going to be about two soups the Ewedu and Okazi soups
from two different tribes “The Yoruba and The Igbo” both in Nigeria.
The Ewedu is soup that is very
popular among the Yoruba; one of my visits to Lagos confirmed this as it was
the soup that is popularly eaten by about 91% of the people living in the area.
If you missed the article about the Ewedu soup, please read the article Food-Tips: Tribal Soup Part1- Nigerian Tribes with Various Types Of Nutritious Tribal Foods and Soups While the Okazi on the other hand, is a soup that is linked with the Igbo tribe
of Nigeria. If you missed the article about the Okazi soup, please read the
article Food-Tips: The Nigeria Igbo Tribe Okazi Soup Preparation and its Nutritiuos Benefits The fact is, these soups are
well known and eaten by many and the soups are best enjoyed with Amala (Yam Flour).
Comparison Similarities and Differences
The Ewedu is a leaf which means
that the soup is cooked with a special type of leaf and if you use another leaf
apart from this Ewedu leaf, then you soup cannot be called the Ewedu soup.
Cooking the Okazi soup also requires a unique leaf known as the Okazi. It is
therefore obvious the reason why the Okazi soup is named after the leaf “Okazi”
because like the Ewedu soup, it uses a special type of leaf too. Though the
Okazi soup is not prepared only with the Okazi leaf, but according to the
locals the leaf is the primary ingredient just like the Ewedu leaf and Ewedu
soup.
The other obvious difference is
that the soup is linked with two different tribes, but I guess you already know
that. Next in the comparison is the ingredient used in preparing these soups,
the Ewedu soup and Okazi soup makes use of Ewedu leaf and Okazi leaf
respectively I its preparation but the Okazi soup make use of the Egusi (Melon)
but this is absent in the Ewedu soup.
The next comparison comes from
the leaf used in preparing these soups, the Ewedu leaf is not sliced but gently
marched most times with Broom but the Okazi leaf is sliced. Another important
difference is going to be in the mode of preparation and how the different
ingredients are used. Amidst all these, other ingredients like the fish, meat,
periwinkle, cray fish, pepper etc remains a matter of choice as to which a
person decides to use and add more flavor to the soup.
From my experience both soups
tastes great and every Nigerian should be proud to have come from a country
with such soups, Hahahaha funny but true. So have you tasted these soups? If
Yes, please tell us your opinion about these soups via your comment below.
